What Women Actually Need to Know About Training: Separating Evidence from Social Media

Social media rewards certainty.


The more absolute the statement, the more likely it is to be shared.


Unfortunately, human physiology is rarely absolute.


Recently, a series of graphics summarizing the work of exercise physiologist Dr. Stacy Sims has circulated widely online. Much of the advice has a solid scientific foundation. Some points simplify complex physiology. Others go beyond what the current evidence can confidently support.


Rather than asking whether the graphics are "right" or "wrong," a better question is:

What can women actually take away from the research?


Let's look at each major claim.


1. Should Women Skip Breakfast Before Training?

One of the strongest claims suggests that fasted exercise makes women gain fat and lose muscle.


The evidence isn't nearly that definitive.


Women do appear to regulate metabolism somewhat differently than men. Estrogen influences fuel selection during exercise, and some women report feeling better when eating before morning training—particularly around menopause or during high training loads.


However, studies have not shown that skipping breakfast automatically causes muscle loss or visceral fat gain.


Instead, the research suggests:

  • Some women perform better after eating.

  • Others tolerate fasted training perfectly well.

  • Energy availability throughout the day matters far more than whether breakfast occurs before exercise.


If you feel stronger, recover better, and eat enough total calories and protein, either approach can work.


2. Is Intermittent Fasting Bad for Women?

Another popular claim is that intermittent fasting "works against women's biology."

Again, reality is more nuanced.


Research has found that time-restricted eating can improve:

  • insulin sensitivity

  • body weight

  • blood sugar control

  • cardiovascular risk factors

in both men and women.


Where problems arise is when fasting becomes combined with:

  • insufficient calories

  • inadequate protein

  • excessive exercise

  • chronic stress

  • poor sleep


These aren't problems caused by fasting itself.

They're problems caused by inadequate recovery.


For some women—especially highly active women, those approaching menopause, or those with very high stress—shorter fasting windows or earlier eating patterns may feel better.


But there isn't strong evidence that all women should avoid intermittent fasting.


3. Is Cardio Making Women "Skinny Fat"?

This may be one of the most misleading claims.


Moderate cardiovascular exercise does not automatically reduce muscle mass or bone density.


In fact, aerobic exercise is consistently associated with:

  • lower cardiovascular disease risk

  • improved metabolic health

  • improved mental health

  • longer lifespan


However...

Cardio alone is usually not enough to preserve muscle and bone as women age.

That's where resistance training becomes essential.


The goal isn't replacing cardio. It's combining it with strength training.


4. Strength Training After 35

This is where the graphics contain one of the strongest messages.


As estrogen gradually declines during perimenopause and menopause, maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important.


Resistance training can help preserve:

  • muscle mass

  • bone density

  • balance

  • insulin sensitivity

  • independence later in life


The suggestion that women should only lift in the 4–6 repetition range, however, isn't supported by current evidence.


Research consistently shows muscle can be built across a wide range of repetitions provided the effort is sufficiently challenging.


Heavy lifting is valuable.

Moderate loads are valuable.

Higher repetitions can also work extremely well.


The best program is one that is:

  • progressive

  • technically sound

  • enjoyable enough to continue for years


5. Exercise Is More Than Burning Calories

This point deserves far more attention.


Many people still view exercise primarily as a way to "burn off" food.

That's a limited way to think about training.


Exercise improves:

  • stress resilience

  • mood

  • sleep

  • blood sugar regulation

  • cardiovascular health

  • cognitive function

  • strength

  • bone health


The calories burned during a workout are actually one of its smaller benefits.

Training should build a stronger, more capable body—not simply create an energy deficit.


6. Creatine for Women

This is another area where the evidence is becoming increasingly convincing.

Creatine isn't just for bodybuilders.


Research supports benefits for women including:

  • increased strength

  • improved training performance

  • better recovery

  • preservation of muscle during aging

  • possible cognitive benefits


A daily dose of approximately 3–5 grams of creatine monohydrate appears safe and effective for most healthy adults.


The graphics also state creatine is safe during pregnancy.

This is one area where caution is warranted.


Although animal studies are promising, routine supplementation during pregnancy is not yet standard clinical practice, and women who are pregnant or trying to conceive should discuss supplementation with their healthcare provider.


7. Cold Water and Sauna

Cold exposure has become incredibly popular.


The graphics suggest women should avoid ice baths and instead use water around 15°C (59°F).


The truth is we simply don't have enough research to make such a universal recommendation.


Women do appear to respond differently to cold than men, but optimal temperatures likely vary considerably depending on:

  • body composition

  • acclimatization

  • goals

  • hormonal status


Sauna research, on the other hand, continues to show encouraging benefits for cardiovascular health and recovery in both men and women.


Neither therapy replaces proper training, nutrition, or sleep.

They should be viewed as optional recovery tools—not necessities.


8. Recovery May Be More Important Than You Think

One message running through all of Dr. Sims' work deserves emphasis.

Recovery matters.


Many active women juggle:

  • careers

  • family

  • caregiving

  • disrupted sleep

  • hormonal transitions

  • demanding training schedules


More exercise isn't always better.


Sometimes the biggest improvements come from:

  • better sleep

  • adequate protein

  • enough calories

  • planned recovery days

  • reducing unnecessary stress


Training adaptations occur during recovery—not during the workout itself.
