GLP-1 Medications: The Benefits, the Drawbacks, and Why Strength & Nutrition Still Matter

GLP-1 medications have become one of the biggest health conversations in recent years.
Originally developed and used for type 2 diabetes management, medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide are now widely known because of their effect on appetite, weight loss, blood sugar control, and cardiometabolic health.
At PuncHIIT, we want to be clear:
We do not endorse GLP-1 medications as a casual weight-loss shortcut.
However, we also understand that for some people — especially those living with type 2 diabetes, obesity-related health risks, or other medical concerns — these medications may be prescribed for valid medical reasons.
As always, medication decisions belong between you and your qualified healthcare provider.
Our role is different.
Our role is to help you build strength, protect muscle, improve nutrition habits, support long-term health, and create a lifestyle that medication alone cannot provide.
What Are GLP-1 Medications?
GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1.
These medications mimic or influence hormones involved in blood sugar regulation, appetite, digestion, and fullness. In people with type 2 diabetes, they can help improve blood sugar control by increasing insulin response when blood sugar is elevated, reducing glucagon, slowing digestion, and helping people feel fuller after eating.
That can be extremely helpful for some diabetes patients.
For many people with type 2 diabetes, GLP-1 medications may help reduce A1C, support weight loss, improve metabolic health, and in certain cases reduce cardiovascular or kidney-related risk.
That is the medical side of the conversation — and it matters.
The Benefits of GLP-1 Medications
When used appropriately under medical supervision, GLP-1 medications can offer meaningful benefits.
They may help with:
Improved blood sugar control
Reduced appetite
Weight loss in people who medically need it
Lower cardiometabolic risk in certain populations
Better management of type 2 diabetes
Possible kidney and cardiovascular benefits in selected patients
Reduced reliance on willpower alone for appetite control
For someone struggling with diabetes, obesity-related complications, or serious metabolic health concerns, these medications may be a valuable tool.
But that word matters:
Tool.
Not solution.
Not replacement.
Not a free pass.
The Drawbacks and Risks
The concern we have is not that these medications exist. The concern is how casually they are sometimes being used.
A medication that may be necessary for one person can become a slippery slope for another when it is used strictly for appearance-based weight loss, without lifestyle change, medical oversight, nutrition support, or strength training.
Common side effects can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, reflux, bloating, reduced appetite, and difficulty eating enough food.
More serious concerns may include dehydration, kidney stress, gallbladder issues, pancreatitis warnings, low blood sugar when combined with certain diabetes medications, and possible complications in people with specific medical histories.
There is also the concern of rapid weight loss.
When weight drops quickly, the body does not only lose body fat. It can also lose lean mass, including muscle. That is a major issue.
Muscle is not just for looking strong.
Muscle supports metabolism, balance, joint health, bone health, insulin sensitivity, independence, and quality of life — especially as we age.
Losing weight while also losing strength is not the win people think it is.
The Slippery Slope of Using GLP-1s Strictly for Weight Loss
This is where we believe the conversation needs more honesty.
Many people are now using GLP-1 medications mainly because they want to lose weight faster.
That may sound appealing, but it raises some important questions:
What happens when the medication stops?
Have better eating habits been built?
Has muscle been protected?
Has strength improved?
Has the person learned how to fuel their body?
Has their relationship with food improved — or simply been suppressed?
Has their health actually improved beyond the number on the scale?
At PuncHIIT, we care far more about strength, resilience, energy, mobility, blood work, confidence, and long-term health than we do about chasing a smaller number at any cost.
Weight loss without strength can leave people weaker.
Weight loss without nutrition education can leave people under-fuelled.
Weight loss without behaviour change can be temporary.
Weight loss without health context can become another version of diet culture.
That is the slippery slope.
If You Need GLP-1 Medication, Strength Training Becomes Even More Important
If your doctor has prescribed a GLP-1 medication, we are not here to shame you.
We are here to support you.
In fact, strength training may become even more important while taking these medications.
A proper strength program can help protect muscle mass, improve insulin sensitivity, support bone density, maintain strength, preserve metabolism, and improve long-term function.
This is especially important if appetite is reduced and weight is coming down quickly.
At PuncHIIT, we can help you train safely, progressively, and intelligently. That may include:
1-on-1 personal training
Small group personal training
Strength training programs
Mobility and injury-prevention work
Boxing or kickboxing for conditioning and confidence
Nutrition coaching
Habit-based support
Accountability and check-ins
The goal is not just to lose weight.
The goal is to stay strong while improving health.
Nutrition Coaching Matters Too
One of the biggest challenges with GLP-1 medications is that people may simply eat less — but not necessarily eat better.
Eating less is not the same as being well nourished.
If your appetite is reduced, you may need help prioritizing protein, hydration, fibre, micronutrients, and enough total food to support training, recovery, and energy.
Our nutrition coaching can help you build a practical plan around:
Getting enough protein
Staying hydrated
Supporting digestion
Managing low appetite
Avoiding under-eating
Preserving muscle
Building sustainable habits
Creating meals that support blood sugar and energy
This is not about extreme dieting.
It is about fuelling your body properly.
Medication Can Help — But It Cannot Do the Work for You
GLP-1 medications may help manage appetite and blood sugar:
They do not build strength.
They do not improve movement quality.
They do not teach you how to eat.
They do not build confidence in the gym.
They do not protect your muscle automatically.
They do not replace coaching, consistency, or lifestyle change.
That is where PuncHIIT comes in.
Whether you are managing diabetes, working with your doctor on a GLP-1 medication, trying to improve your health, or looking for a more sustainable path than another weight-loss cycle, we can help you build the foundation that lasts.
Our Position
We do not promote GLP-1 medications for casual weight loss.
We do recognize that they may be medically necessary for some people.
And if you are using them under proper medical guidance, we strongly encourage you to pair that with strength training, nutrition coaching, and lifestyle support.
Because the real goal is not just losing weight.
The real goal is becoming stronger, healthier, more capable, and more resilient.
